Three Northeast Ohio Orangetheory Fitness studios are piloting a mental health initiative that the creator hopes will help clients, train new professionals and keep the doors open in case of another pandemic shutdown.

This month, gyms in Akron, Canton and Copley launched Orangetherapy, which brings in local health professionals to discuss topics like job loss, insomnia, stress management, social media stressors and other wellness-focused topics at the end of classes.

Mental health professionals who were already working at Orangetheory, as well as local interns, are offering the additional support at no cost to clients.

Because the gyms are providing mental health resources, they are able to be open outside Ohio’s 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.

“This is 100% in direct response to the need that we have seen in our community because of the pandemic,” said Rhonda Stark, creator of Orangetherapy and owner of the three local franchises. “We’re trying to respond to the fact that nationally, 18% of people with COVID-19 end up with a mental health issue within 90 days.”
