Brothers open Riverside Sports Academy gym in Port Huron Township

Amber Lee, also known as “Ahlee The Great,” remembers training with the Browning brothers seven years ago, back when they trained on the street outside their home.

“There was no none of this, it was just a dream at that point,” she said, gesturing around to the equipment and people training in Riverside Sports Academy in Port Huron Township Tuesday morning.

Tim and Matt Browning, brothers born in Detroit and raised in the Port Huron area, opened the gym in early January. The sports training facility already has probably well over 200 members, Tim Browning said.

The gym offers boxing lessons, personal training, high-intensity interval training, yoga classes, cardio work, core work and much more.

The brothers, both Kimball Township residents, started talking about opening the business when the pandemic hit, Tim Browning said.

He has worked at other gyms in the past, Viking Fitness, Planet Fitness and the YMCA of the Blue Water Area. When the pandemic hit, he was teaching classes at parks and beaches, “all the outdoor facilities,” but knew if he could get a building it would be better for him and his clients.

The brothers have always been involved in fitness, playing sports in high school, winning Golden Gloves and playing football for Sarnia. They wanted to give back to the community and share “our talent, our gift,” Tim Browning said.

He said his passion comes from wanting “to be at my peak, be at my best” and helping others get to the same place.

Matt Browning said it’s about community first. They want to build relationships with kids in the area and help them find the right path in life. They want to teach people how to be a better person, not just how to box.

“We’ll be their friend and lead them the right way,” Matt Browning said, and “in here we’re going to teach you the right thing.”

He said when they had the finances together, donations from the community and the opportunity to get the building for Riverside Sports Academy they were able to open this winter.

The brothers are leasing the space but are looking to expand, into either another part of the building or by buying a nearby property.

There were five people in the gym working out Tuesday morning. Matt Browning did a boxing lesson in the ring while Tim Browning worked with two women doing exercises like burpees.

One of those women was St. Clair resident Mandi Lomasney, who said Tim Browning “is incredible.”
