If you’ve been paying attention to hair care over the past years, you’ll have noticed a trend of products designed specifically for the scalp. It makes a certain sense — a healthy scalp is the literal foundation for healthy hair. In a response to what Neutrogena terms the “skinification” of hair care, the brand is launching the Healthy Scalp Collection, a range of shampoos and conditioners that combine the company’s history of iconic skin-care products with the latest hair-care technology.
“We took the best of skin-care ingredients and infused them into premium, hair-care formulas. The result, is premium hair care, designed to promote a healthy scalp environment,” Jaime Kontz, associate director of research and development for Vogue International, tells Allure.
While designing the formulas, Kontz and her team had to balance the need for skin care that would soothe the scalp with hair care that would provide all the healthy-looking, shiny results of a shampoo. “It was imperative for us that the formulas are gentle on the scalp while providing salon-quality performance on the strands,” she says.
The result is a new range with four different shampoo and conditioner pairings, each one formulated for a specific scalp concern. You probably already know your skin type and skin concerns. In choosing a scalp-care shampoo, think about issues you may have with your scalp and hair. Is it too dry? Too oily? Feels tight and irritated? The answer will determine which pairing is right for you.
Those with dry scalp and dry hair can opt for Hydro Boost with Hyaluronic Acid. “Hyaluronic acid can prevent dry scalp and hair thinning due to its incredible ability to retain moisture,” explains cosmetic chemist David Petrillo. “When used in hair products, hyaluronic acid binds to the strands and hair follicles to give hair a smoother look and feel and support less breakage.”
If you have the opposite problem — oily scalp and hair — there’s Clarify & Shine with Pink Grapefruit, an ingredient that Petrillo says “has potent antibacterial and antimicrobial effects, which make it a great scalp cleanser.” Grapefruit is also rich in vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin A, and biotin, which help keep hair shiny and healthy.
For sensitive skin types, Gentle & Soft with Micellar Water will cleanse the scalp without any harshness. According to Miami-based board-certified dermatologist Annie Gonzalez, micellar water “can restore balance into the hair, resulting in sheen, body, and luster. It also addresses scalp buildup without stripping the scalp.”
Finally, for a dry scalp that feels tight or uncomfortable, Soothe & Calm with Tea Tree Oil will help hydrate away any irritation. Gonzalez recommends tea tree-infused hair care for “keeping hair moisturized and keeping dandruff at bay by preventing the accumulation of dry skin on the scalp.”
If we are indeed “skin-ifying” our hair-care routines, it means that shampoo and conditioner are just the first step to a full scalp and hair-care regimen. Once you’ve got these bottles in hand, follow them up with scrubs, treatments, and more scalp care.
Each shampoo and conditioner within the Neutrogena Healthy Scalp Collection retails for $12 and is available now on walmart.com.
