Rebel Wilson’s Weight Loss Journey Requires “Daily Effort” With Exercise and Nutrition

If you’ve been keeping up with Rebel Wilson on Instagram, then you’re certainly aware of the Pitch Perfect star’s inspiring weight loss journey. After declaring 2020 her “Year of Health,” Wilson has been keeping fans updated on her progress with posts detailing her fitness routine, diet changes, and motivation tips.

And she’s crushing it! On Sunday, Wilson shared a photo during her morning hike, and she let her fans know that she’s so close to reaching her weight loss goals.

“Gearing up for a great week ahead,” she wrote in the caption. “This week was super busy, but I got up super early 3 times (6 a.m. 😜) and went on a hike…even did a couple of 100 m sprints to get the heart rate even higher (although my ‘sprint’ is probably someone else’s ‘slow jog’ 😝) but I felt proud of myself and now only 3 kgs away from my goal weight!”

In May, Wilson shared that her goal was to hit 165 pounds by the end of the year. “I’ll be honest with you guys—with my ‘Year of Health’ mission I’m trying to get to 75 kgs, and career-wise am trying to get one of my movies into production before the end of the year,” she wrote. “Both of these things are requiring a daily effort and there’s constant setbacks—but I’m working hard.”

Although Wilson looks amazing just as she is, it’s clear the actress is determined to meet her goals. Here’s everything we know about her fitness and nutrition routine in 2020:

1. She initially lost weight while filming Cats.

Wilson’s weight loss transformation first began while she was shooting Cats in 2019. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in December, the 39-year-old actress said that she lost eight pounds in four days while filming. (Note that the CDC recommends 1 to 2 pounds as a safe amount to lose in a week.)

“They heated up the set very high, to almost 100°F, so that we could never cool down,” Wilson told ET. “These people are like, the best dancers in the whole world, so they can’t cool their muscles down or they could get an injury and they’d be out of the film.”

2. She cut down on sugar and junk food.

Wilson wanted to continue her weight loss journey into 2020, and declared it her “Year of Health” in early January. In an Instagram post on January 2, she shared three photos from a walk along the beach, and let her fans know the lifestyle changes she was planning to make, like loading up on more water while avoiding sugar and junk food. “Who’s with me in making some positive changes this year?” she wrote.

In another post from August, Wilson said one time at dinner she was “reaching for the candies,” and decided to rethink the decision. “I thought to myself ‘hmmmm…better not’ and had a bottle of water instead,” she wrote in the caption, also adding that she was just 18 pounds from her goal weight.

Although Wilson cuts down on sugar and junk food for the most part, she still makes room for balance. For instance, she shared a video of her enjoying a pastry in Monaco. “Remember though girls, you still gotta treat yourself 😘 🍰,” she wrote in the caption. “I just do it with food now only once or twice a week…and substitute bubble baths on alternate nights.”

3. She’s reportedly following the Mayr Method.

Wilson is said to be following the Mayr Method, a restrictive program that claims to promote weight loss by improving gut health. According to People, Wilson has achieved “amazing results” with the Mayr Method after visiting the Austrian luxury medical detox and wellness center VivaMayr.

The Mayr Method is based on the “Mayr Cure,” created by Austrian physician Franz Xaver Mayr, M.D. The diet kicks off by eliminating sugar and caffeine and suggests specific eating habits like chewing food at least 40 to 60 times. The Mayr Method also eliminates snacking and reduces gluten and dairy.

4. She hits the gym most days of the week.

In January, Wilson’s trainer, Jono Castano Acero, shared a video of the actress working hard in the gym with a set of battle ropes. “Friday vibes but @rebelwilson has been putting in the yards seven days a week! Proud of you girl ❤️,” Acero captioned the post.

That said, she does sneak in a rest day now and then. Acero told Women’s Health Australia that a “typical workout week” includes a ton of high intensity interval training:

5. She gets her steps in every day.

In an interview with Hollywood Life, Acero said Wilson has been committed to her workout routine, which involves daily cardio, whether it’s running or walking. “I encourage all my clients to do an extra bit of cardio during the day to keep moving,” Acero told the outlet. “A little tip is get a watch or use your phone to count steps and aim for 10,000 steps a day. If you’re on 9,000 steps at 10 p.m. you have to get it done.”

Wilson loves to walk outdoors. She shared a few photos from a hike in Palm Springs, FL, where she climbed high up a hill for a photo op in her Gym Shark athleisure outfit.

6. She likes to box and flip tires.

Yep, she consistently switches things up! Wilson shared a video of her flipping a large tire as part of an outdoor workout, showing off her strength. “Starting the week off right! Look out @chrishemsworth & @liamhemsworth 👀 Australia’s latest action hero is turning it up! 💪🏻” she wrote in the caption.

Wilson also likes to box. The Cats star shared two photos and a video of her boxing in a ring.

7. She uses TRX to build strength and coordination.

Wilson’s trainer told Hollywood Life that a typical circuit Wilson does in the gym involves the assault bike (as fast as possible until she reaches 10 calories burned), battle rope slams (30 seconds), and TRX squats (20 reps). “I use the TRX as it focuses on using bodyweight and gravity as resistance to build strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, core and joint stability,” Acero said.

She also works on her core with a standing bandit trunk rotation and dead bugs with a medicine ball, which Acero says are “effective, safe, and a great way to strengthen and stabilize your core, spine, and back muscles.”
