Both gym and yoga are equally good practices if you are looking to get fit. Both forms of workouts have theirown special offerings and come with options. But the question that arises is which form is better? Do we buy yoga bricks, mats and begin or is a membership to the gym a better way of keeping fit? This World Yoga Day 2021 or International Yoga Day 2021, which is celebrated on June 21, we walk you through the comparison between the two.
Grandmaster Akshar told HerZindagi that “what you choose will be based entirely on what your objective and requirement is. The gym has its hi-tech set of equipment and facilities for bodybuilding, muscle training and more. And, yoga consists of asanas, mudras, breathing exercises, and other practices that don’t need much more than a yoga mat. Here are some benefits of practicing yoga over the gym.”
Yoga Is Both Internal And External
“Yoga takes care of your overall well-being be it is physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. When youare a practitioner of yoga, you will find that you have more than just physical postures to gain knowledge from. However, asanas come with innumerable benefits for you. While the gym works on functional fitness and muscle training. Yoga trains you to build your strength, flexibility and focuses on breathwork. Asanas consist of different formations and variations of postures that are done for the whole body- internal and external whereas gym is mainly focussed on the aspect of your external appearance,” Akshar told us.
Gain Self-Mastery On Your Mat
Additionally, yoga can be done on a yoga mat with no equipment and this involves little fuss. You cancarry your mat anywhere and practice anytime. But gyms are highly specialised centers with many types of equipment that are used to build your physical strength, flexibility etc.
“Yoga is a highly specialised practice based on spirituality that works not only on the body but also helps your mind and emotions. It teaches asanas for the body but this is like a moving meditation with breathing which helps you regulate your mind. In this way, yoga allows you to gain mastery over your senses and emotions,” he shared.
According to Akshar, yoga has “84 lakh postures, 300 known pranayama techniques, hundreds and even thousands of meditation exercises. Yoga is considered an ancient art form that goes back well over 5,000 years ago.”
The gym does not really help those who suffer from mental disturbances such as anxiety, depression, and other stress-related disorders. It is suggested that those in need of mental well-being should perform a practice like yoga. This is because when the mind is disturbed, then there is a disconnection between the mind and body.
The expert believes that this lack of alignment with your breath may not help you have a safe practice. You are more likely to injure yourself during a workout when the mind is not able to focus on the task at hand.
Therapeutic Benefits of Yoga
Drawing the benefits of yoga, Akshar shared that yoga is also recommended by medical practitioners. Akin to healing practices, yoga is rather therapeutic.
“This is due to the fact that yoga does not focus only on your physical body but it also and very importantly works on your mental well being.”
Both gym and yoga come with their own sets of advantages depending on your need. It can be suggested that you combine these two practices so you can gain the best of both worlds.
